Letter from the President of HCS – Two-year Action Plan

Dear Colleagues,

On the occasion of the beginning of my term as President of the Hellenic Society of Cardiology, a position I am honored to have after having been elected two years ago, I would like to share with you the main axes of the actions that the new Board of Directors will strive to implement in the years 2017-2019.

It goes without saying that the positive work of all the previous Boards and Presidents provides a strong foundation on which we will rely on in order to achieve the goals of the HCS and from this position I would like to thank them and state that their experience will always be helpful and welcome. I would also like to emphasize that I am particularly pleased with the composition of the current BOD, where the new ideas and past experience are combined with the spirit of cooperation and teamwork.

The basic principles of the BOD action plan are representativeness, transparency, economic rationalization, team effort and setting realistic goals. In this context, other people apart from the members of the BOD will be asked to contribute to our efforts and also after every BOD meeting (on the first Tuesday of each month) you will be informed via the newsletter and through the HCS website on the main issues discussed during the meeting.

1. CONTINUING EDUCATION-TRAINING PROGRAM IN CARDIOLOGY-CARDIOVASCULAR MEDICINE

A. PANHELLENIC CARDIOLOGICAL CONGRESSES-PANHELLENIC SEMINARS of WG-REGIONAL CONGRESSES

We have already scheduled the major HCS training activities (Panhellenic Congress of Cardiology and Seminars of Working Groups) for 2017-19 and the Regional Congresses for 2017, as shown in the table below. This will help to better elaborate and shape the scientific program (e.g. acceptance of invitation by prominent foreign speakers etc.), but also in the more cost-effective management of events.

In particular, with the completion of 70 years since the establishment of HCS in 2017-19, the 38th Panhellenic Congress of Cardiology 2017 will be celebrating this anniversary and actions for the prevention and treatment of the modifiable risk factors (smoking, obesity) will be planned. A five-member HCS group (A.Synetos, L.Poulimenos, D.Farmakis, I.Skiadas, K.Dimitriadis) is working diligently to reform the program of the Panhellenic Congress of Cardiology and every HCS member can send his/her proposal to HCS (until 20/2/17), so that the Board will be able to approve the final program of the Congress in good time.

Vasiliiadis, Assistant Editors: D. Tsekoura, O. Kaitozis.

5. HCS WEBSITE

At present, no HCS goal can be met unless it is backed up by a website of high standards. For this reason, a thorough redesign of the HCS website is already underway with a contact column for members, an app, a column for communication with the public, and the promotion of e-health in general. In this context, Ms. Ch. Chrysochoou and Mr. G. Giannopoulos are appointed Web editors. Within the month of February, the new HCS website will operate.

6. HCS WG

The HCS WGs (Director: The President Elect Mr. Goudevenos) constitute the backbone of the company and their successful educational efforts will have the full support of the Board with the vision to make more and better organized registries and to practice more distance learning. At the same time, we will immediately examine the requests for the creation of new working groups (e.g. WG of cerebrovascular event) or to legally register the possession of an ERC certified ALS certificate as a prerequisite for the completion of the cardiology specialty. In this context, HCS could train all future cardiology trainees free of charge in the first year of their cardiology specialty.

Cardiovascular Specialties. HCS in cooperation with the respective WG will proceed with the issue of certification of cardiovascular specialty (e.g. Invasive Cardiology, Invasive Electrophysiology) in cooperation with the state, or on its own initiative in case of obstruction of the latter.

With the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), with the promotion of e-learning, the Diploma of European Cardiologist and the organization of joint sessions at the annual European Congress of Cardiology (this year in Barcelona on chronic coronary artery disease) and at the Panhellenic Congress of Cardiology.

With the American College of Cardiology (ACC), with the twinning of the Greek / Cyprus ACC chapter with the ACC Chapter of New Jersey, to allow for further training of Greek cardiologists who wish it and the organization of joint sessions at the ACC Annual Congress. At this year's ACC congress in Washington, HCS, together with ACC and the German Cardiac Society, co-organize a session on kidney dysfunction in the patient with heart disease and at the corresponding Panhellenic Congress of Cardiology an important goal is the complete recording of the Greek Cardiologists and doctors of Cardiovascular Medicine of the Diaspora in order for them to fulfil their potential.

B. Discussion-discovering ways of mutual understanding with the other Scientific Societies operating in the wider cardiovascular field.

C. Close cooperation with state institutions (Director: E. Matsakas with the help of E. Sanidas) for the promotion of issues of education, research, employment and insurance of its members, as well as issues related to the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases of the Greek population. The WG of freelance professionals with Mr. Patsourakos and Mr. Koroniotis will make a significant contribution to this activity.

9. ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF HCS

• In the difficult economic times we are called to serve HCS, it is necessary to rationalize the costs, so that HCS does not face a viability problem. Indicative actions include the following: modernization of the HCS computerized accounting system, compliance with the budget for the year, signature checking of each document of expenditure by the treasurer, regular three-month balance sheet in the Board of Directors with audit by the accountant and the chartered accountant, proportional salary adjustments of HCS staff and exploring the possibility of using the existing HCS building infrastructure.

Dear Colleagues,

HCS constitutes the home of the Greek Cardiologist. I am absolutely convinced that all Greek Cardiologists are interested in achieving the goals of HCS and that the respective BOD must serve the Greek Cardiologist. Any signed suggestion, comment or recommendation to HCS is welcome and will receive the necessary attention and response from the Board.

I invite you to be close to HCS and its actions and I wish you, on behalf of the Board, a happy and creative year for the Hellenic Society of Cardiology as a whole and for each HCS member separately.
